Malloch clearly presents the current arguments surrounding wealth and wealth creation, and asserts that the most profitable businesses significantly help our society by recreating work environments that promote integrity and religious liberty. Malloch includes anecdotes about multiple businesses and relevant literature to support his argument–which are quite illuminating…especially the companies that implement the principles that Malloch recommend.

One drawback about Doing Virtuous Business is that Malloch writes in a more scholarly fashion–a bit more dense than the usual, so although Malloch includes many good points defending “Virtuous Business,” I would only recommend this book to those who like reading academic texts. But, if anyone would like a quick summary of companies that exemplify certain virtues, like honesty, respect, and generosity, Malloch includes a very easy-to-read appendix at the end of his book that I would highly recommend! It’d probably be good to use for situations like job interviews!

The Final Summit, sequel to the (awesome!) Traveler’s Gift–showing the final years of David Ponder’s life–a man who lost everything, but through the 7 Decisions, was able to get back on his feet and eventually, donate his riches. But after his wife passed away, he lost his direction and motivation to live, which coincides with the “Final Summit”–where he and the rest of the “travelers” must find the answer that will help keep humanity alive.

I absolutely LOVED The Final Summit. So easy to read. So thoughtfully written. Such great words of encouragement and inspiration. Plus, we get to see how Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Joan of Arc and Anne Frank talk! Andrews has this amazing simplicity with all of his books that speak to teens, college kids, adults, … Through this novel, I was able to reflect on my own life and get mentored by Andrews on how to make the best changes now!

Outlive Your Life by Max Lucado gives you perspective on the reality of life–how each choice we make between life and death will dictate whether we will outlive our life or simply be forgotten. Through various anecdotes and easy-to-read commentary, Lucado shares different examples of people who have left a legacy and how we can also apply those principles to positively impact those around us.

I’ve tried reading Lucado’s other book, As God Came Near and it was hard for me to keep going after the first chapter, but I was pleasantly surprised with Outlive Your Life. It was much more easy to follow and direct. I even cried while reading one of the anecdotes…the one about the wounded little girl…it really showed me the significance of a few seconds–each second is so precious…it can completely alter the course of one’s life.

At first, I was a little apprehensive about starting the book because it looks thick, once I looked through, it was fine because the font size is pretty big and the margins are wide. So the book goes by pretty quickly and leaves you in a great mood after reading.

If you want something that will help you embrace each moment, I’d definitely recommend this book!

A Leader’s Heart by John Maxwell is a 365 day devotional journal that includes a Bible verse with a leadership principle from one of Maxwell’s publications. Each month has a specific theme and each day has a principle and an application question (and space for an answer) that helps you focus and apply that principle to your day.

First of all, the colors are very nice–instead of a black, a dark brown font color helps relax the eyes. And there’s a nice border design at the top of each page. Plus, the cover is sturdy, textured and looks classy.

I also love how the devotional is set up–to make it more personal, he included an application question and space to answer. Maxwell is always great communicator–making difficult concepts easy to understand–and it definitely shows in the devotional. One of my favorites include, “Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously”–Maxwell gives his own take on the subject, includes a little anecdote about Calvin Coolidge to solidify the concept, gives some advice (laugh it off!) and then in the application question, asks: “How do you relax?” So simple and effective!

A Leader’s Heart 365 Day Devotional would be a great gift for others and for yourself!

It’s easy to just have a “normal” day, but Andy Andrews challenges our apathetic attitude with The Butterfly Effect. Through several stories and facts, Andrews shows how each and every choice we make has life-long and even eternal effects. Effects that are never neutral, but will always help or hurt ourselves, the people around us and people we will never meet.

I love all of Andrews’ books and I really, really enjoyed this one. It’s a different publishing style from his other books, but it was refreshing. Because it’s so easy-to-understand and every page has a different layout, it’s for all ages…especially for those friends who hate reading–this is a great book to help them get back into the habit! Definitely should get multiple copies to share an encouraging word with friends too!!

From over 20 years of counseling experience, Paula Rinehart gives psychological, biblical and biological notes on how men and women are different and complementary. By spelling out the general types of men and real-life situations, she gives straightforward and practical advice that helps women better understand and therefore, better love the men in their life.

I read this book because I wanted to better understand my dad and how I could help him. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be good because it was a woman writing about men, but I was pleasantly surprised. I could tell that she really did have a lot of experience and help writing the book with men because I actually saw some of the situations she wrote about. Plus, she wrote in an easy-to-read way with lots of short, memorable quotes, so I really liked it! Definitely nice to have just in case you’d like to share it with a friend.

>>>>What we do everyday determines our future, not one event.

“We associate the willingness to risk great failure — and the ability to climb back from catastrophe — with great courage.

But in this we are wrong.

…There is more courage and heroism in defying the human impulse, in taking the purposeful & painful steps to prepare for the unimaginable.”

-Malcolm Gladwell’s What the Dog Saw

>>>>The seemingly simple things we have to do everyday (like studying, listening to someone more wise/successful than you, reading a book, etc) to defy the “human impulse” is probably the hardest to do. But definitely worth it.
